If your weekend plans need a little chaos, Community Park is hosting a cardboard boat race — and crews can still register before the fun starts.

The cardboard regatta is one of those events that looks like pure silliness until you're standing at the water's edge watching a vessel hold together for three full laps — and then watching the next one fold in half on contact. What separates the boats that float from the ones that don't usually comes down to sealant discipline and weight distribution, not the quality of the cardboard, so first-timers who over-engineer the hull and under-think the crew placement tend to learn that lesson the wet way. Community Park's lagoon is shallow and forgiving, which is exactly why this works as a family event — nobody's in danger, just in for a soaking. If you're on the fence about entering, the registration window is the thing to act on now, not the boat-building itself, since a basic design can come together in an evening with duct tape, a few boxes, and a couple of tubes of waterproof caulk.
